Wear Characteristics and Maintenance Tips: Engine Damper
The engine damper reduces crankshaft torsional vibrations, which results in quieter operation, reduced crankshaft stress, reduced gear wear, reduced water pump wear, longer belt life, and longer front-drive accessory life.
Maintenance Guidelines: · Visually inspect the damper as part of general maintenance, looking for torn or split rubber. · Do not assume the damper is performing to specifications just because it appears to be good. The natural frequency may have changed enough to cause problems with the crankshaft, front-driven accessories, or increased noise. An engine damper consists of a hub, inertial ring, and elastic member. Because the elastic member is exposed to heat and dirt, it may lose its elasticity or ability to dampen over time. · The damper cannot be repaired. Replace the engine damper: · Every 4,500 hours or 5 years · At major overhaul when installing an overhaul kit · When a new short block or complete block assembly · When a John Deere Reman basic engine is installed | ILLUS.
